Production

Always authentic

  • Break stereotypes by casting actors of different body types, genders, ethnicities, and abilities.
  • Makeup and wardrobe styling should be presentable, relatable, and on trend.
  • Tell your stories in lived-in, believable sets and real-world locations.
  • Storyboard your scenes on paper first to plan your narratives shot-by-shot.
  • Make sure your color grade is neutral but vibrant enough to use without additional color correction.

Production

Stunningly cinematic

  • Light and properly expose your subjects to make them stand out, and frame your shots dynamically and consistently.
  • When handholding your camera, use image stabilization to prevent camera jitter. Your movements should always revolve around who or what the viewer should pay attention to.
  • A frame rate of 23.98fps and 25fps will always look the most cinematic and natural. Keep your shutter speed double your framerate — for example, 23.98fps and 1/48 shutter speed.
  • Always reset your white balance when changing lighting environments.

Production

Pristine productions

  • Make sure you have your location and casting releases and permits signed and filed, and have all copyrighted imagery or symbols removed from your shoot location.
  • Play with opposites to increase creativity. For example, bring the indoors outside or the outdoors inside.
  • Cut your clips to show the completion of an action. Clips should ideally be around 6-20 seconds long.
  • Apply visual effects sparingly when adding them in post to keep your content from aging too quickly.
